PHILADELPHIA, PA - At FBBCF, we believe in the power of community engagement and the importance of fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the youth they serve. That’s why we were proud to support the Philadelphia Police Department’s Painting with a Cop event at the Officer Vaird Boys and Girls Club in Feltonville on Tuesday, March 25, as part of our Police Youth Alliance program.
This inspiring event brought together over 60 children from the local community and dozens of dedicated officers to create heartfelt portraits of Officer Lauretha Vaird. Officer Vaird holds a significant place in Philadelphia’s history as the first female police officer in the city to be killed in the line of duty back in 1996. Nearly 30 years later, her legacy remains a powerful reminder of sacrifice and commitment to service.
Through art, the children and officers engaged in meaningful conversations, fostering trust and strengthening community bonds in a non-enforcement setting. It was a touching tribute to a fallen hero and a testament to the ongoing commitment of FBBCF's Police Youth Alliance program.
A special thanks to Captain Maria Ortiz-Rodriguez for leading the charge in making this event a reality, alongside the Community Relations Office and the dedicated members of the 25th District. Their hard work and dedication were instrumental in bringing this initiative to life.
CBS Philadelphia covered this heartwarming event, capturing the significance of the evening and the impact it had on both officers and children alike. You can check out the coverage here: CBS News Philadelphia.
