Police Youth Alliance: Bridging The Gap

The Police Youth Alliance is an initiative of the Families Behind the Badge Children's Foundation designed to cultivate positive relationships and interactions between police officers and the children in the communities they serve. We believe that through nonconfrontational, student appealing activities, students and officers can create a bond which will ultimately change the dynamic in disadvantaged areas of Philadelphia.

Current Programs

Over the past 5 years we have had a variety of different programs participating in PYA including gardening, art, reading, chess, drum line, step dance, carpentry, robotics, bike safety and sports. Our programs have evolved year after year in order to appeal to the students and showcase hobbies of the police officers and teachers.

Our Police Youth Alliance program began in direct response to President Obama's The President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing released in May 2015. The report stated that "law enforcement agencies should create opportunities in schools and communities for positive, non-enforcement interactions with police," which led to PYA being formed.

Year End Chess Tournament & Showcase

Since 2017 we have partnered with Temple University to host our Year End Chess Tournament & Showcase. Each May we have brought together over 200 Independence Mission School students for an end of year celebration. All of our PYA chess clubs students compete in a tournament style chess competition while our drum lines and step clubs perform during each round of play.
